Anyone familiar with Bruckner - especially with his symphonic architectures reaching for the stars, but also with the later Mass settings of the 1860s - is likely to be astonished at how deeply this work is still rooted in the solid tradition of Viennese Classicism. Yet the rediscovery of this rarely performed piece is only the beginning: the concert on which this recording is based set itself the fascinating task of placing Bruckner’s half‑hour Mass within the broader musical framework of the inauguration ceremony of Provost Friedrich Mayr on 14 September 1854 in St. Florian.
Thus, the Mass is complemented by settings of the Proper by Robert Führer, Joseph Eybler, and Johann Baptist Gänsbacher.
Recorded at the Konzerthaus Berlin in June 2017.
