Heart‑rendingly beautiful laments that at the same time open the gate to the hereafter:
Bejun Mehta and the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin present, on their new CD, a program of sacred and secular cantatas entirely devoted to the Baroque art of lamentation.
From Handel’s intimate love cantata unfolds an arc that leads all the way to the pain‑filled wounds of love expressed with Italian fury. With Bach’s Ich habe genug, the recording also features one of Johann Sebastian Bach’s most famous and most moving cantatas. Of particular charm is Melchior Hoffmann’s contribution to the genre, which, with vivid tone‑painting, even lets the passing‑bell toll to portray the final hour of life. With his voice - so flawless and yet so flexible in expression - Bejun Mehta turns each of these works into an event in its own right.
