Liebster Jesu, mein Verlangen BWV 32
Ich geh und suche mit Verlangen BWV 49
Selig ist der Mann BWV 57
Although Bach wrote no operas, his dialogue cantatas - like his Passions - are works of the highest emotional power. Presented in the form of a dialogue, this special group of cantatas depicts an intimate exchange between the Christian soul (soprano) and Jesus Christ (bass). Martin Luther wrote that “faith unites the soul with Christ as a bride with her bridegroom,” thus drawing on the medieval idea of bridal mysticism. This idea finds its most intensely sensual - also musically sensual - expression in Bach’s cantata “Ich geh und suche mit Verlangen.”
