Telemann
Sieg der Schönheit
In the year 455, the Vandal people - true to the reputation their name later acquired - paid a dramatic visit to Rome under their king Geiseric, an event that gave rise to the term “vandalism.” This historical backdrop forms the setting for Georg Philipp Telemann’s spectacular stage work, premiered on July 13, 1722, shortly after he had been appointed Hamburg’s new opera director. Der Sieg der Schönheit (“The Triumph of Beauty”) is a typically baroque tale of intertwined romances leading to four happy endings, filled with complications that must be overcome along the way. Telemann exploits the full range of musical and theatrical expression available to him, from dazzling arias and powerful choruses to intimate emotions and martial scenes. The result was a major public triumph - a true “victory of beauty” whose impact, as the recording demonstrates, continues to resonate today.
