Liberame, Domine
With an introduction by Markus Vanhoefer
For nearly two decades, the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin has been a welcome - and above all: well‑heard-partner of the Bavarian Radio Chorus. After presenting several highly acclaimed concerts and recordings together featuring the music of Handel and Bach, as well as Mozart’s Mass in C minor, the ensemble now turns to another key work by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: the Requiem in D minor, K. 626, which - like the aforementioned C‑minor Mass - remained unfinished.
Howard Arman, who conducted this concert in Munich’s Herkulessaal, not only re‑examined the musical text handed down by Mozart and first completed by his student Franz Xaver Süßmayr; he also expanded the program to include the later‑composed responsory “Libera me” by Sigismund Ritter von Neukomm. This section is missing in Mozart’s Requiem, and Neukomm - a student of Michael Haydn who later also worked for Joseph Haydn - created a music‑historical monument with this “Mozart addendum.”
