A. Bruckner
Requiem d-Major
On 14 March 1849, the 24‑year‑old Anton Bruckner completed his first major vocal work. The composer’s only Requiem - he who would later become the architect of great symphonic “castles in the sky” - was written during his years in St. Florian. A few references to older models and some stylistic inconsistencies within the musical structure reveal the young composer’s phase of artistic self-discovery.
But those who listen closely will already discover passages in which the mystical aura and majesty of his great orchestral scores begin to shine through - whether in the gently glowing sound of the Benedictus, the intimate confession of faith in the Agnus Dei, or the powerful and masterfully conceived double fugue Quam olim Abrahae.
It is “Bruckner on the path to becoming Bruckner.”
