On their first joint CD, the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin and this exceptional singer devote themselves to key works of Vivaldi’s sacred music: his psalm setting Nisi Dominus, the Stabat Mater, and the motet In furore — three highly expressive vocal works that showcase Vistoli’s fascinatingly agile voice and his richness of interpretation to full advantage. In these pieces, the great Venetian master made sovereign use of the musical language of the concerto and the opera. For like hardly any other composer of the Italian Baroque, Vivaldi endowed sacred music with a new and extraordinarily emotional power. He set religious texts with bittersweet sadness and operatic verve.
