Beethoven
Symphonies 1 & 2
Ludwig van Beethoven, Symphonies nos. 1 & 2
Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach:
• Symphonie in F major Wq 175
• Symphonie in G major Wq 183,4
Beethoven valued the compositions of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach - particularly his keyboard works - so highly that he recommended them “to every true artist not only for great enjoyment, but also for study.”
This admiration is clearly audible in the realm of instrumental music as well, for both composers opened up new sonic spaces in their symphonies in remarkably similar ways. Their music conveyed to contemporaries a compellingly new and fiercely personal musical language.
Enjoy the juxtaposition of Beethoven’s first two symphonies with works by the Bach son in this recording!
